Elgato is a creator-technology brand founded in 1999 and now owned by Corsair. The company develops audiovisual hardware and software for streamers, video creators, podcasters, remote professionals and other people who produce digital content. Elgato’s current About page describes the brand as a provider of audiovisual technology for creators across video-sharing platforms and emphasizes an ecosystem approach in which hardware, software and firmware are designed to work together. Corsair acquired the Elgato brand and its employees in 2018, while the Eve smart-home business became a separate company.
That acquisition is important because older profiles can still describe Elgato as an independent German hardware company or mix Elgato and Eve support information. Today Elgato remains a distinct consumer-facing brand within Corsair, with its own product site, support center and software. The product range spans several categories. Stream Deck controllers provide programmable buttons and workflow automation; capture devices connect consoles or cameras to computers; Facecam webcams focus on creator-oriented video; Wave microphones and audio tools cover voice capture and mixing; Key Light products handle lighting; and teleprompter, mounting and other accessories support studio setups.
Software such as Stream Deck and Wave Link is a major part of the experience, so compatibility should be checked at both hardware and software level. A device can physically connect to a computer but still require a supported operating system, USB bandwidth, graphics capability or specific application version. Video capture is especially demanding. Resolution, frame rate, HDR, passthrough and encoding features depend on the capture model and computer. A customer intending to capture 4K or high-refresh gameplay should verify the exact input/output specification rather than assuming all Elgato capture cards work identically.
USB ports also differ in bandwidth even when they share the same connector shape. Audio products have similar complexity: microphone signal, monitoring, software mixing and application routing can require correct configuration. Stream Deck integrations depend on plugins and third-party application APIs that can change, so an old tutorial may stop working after software updates. Elgato frequently updates firmware and applications, which is useful for new features but makes current support documentation more reliable than legacy guides. The brand’s ecosystem can be valuable because devices are designed to integrate, but customers do not need to own every Elgato product to use one component.
Support is handled through Elgato’s official Help Center, including technical articles, downloads, warranty and contact routes. The 2018 ownership transition did not eliminate Elgato product support; the company explicitly stated that support and warranty coverage would continue after the Corsair acquisition. Direct purchases and third-party retailer purchases can nevertheless follow different return policies. Content creators should also understand that capture hardware does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted video, music or subscription content. Platform and rights-holder rules still apply. Temporary product generations, firmware versions and creator partnerships should stay outside the evergreen profile. A buyer should focus on operating-system compatibility, port bandwidth, source resolution, software integration and warranty support for the exact product.
