Walter L. Jacobs started the business in Chicago in 1918 with a fleet of 12 Model T Fords. John D. Hertz acquired the operation in 1923 and renamed it Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System, establishing the brand name that later became globally recognized.
Hertz now offers rentals across many countries, but vehicle classes, deposits, payment methods, optional products, toll programs, mileage, age rules and protection products vary by location and rate. The rental agreement and pickup-country terms therefore control the individual booking.
In the United States, Hertz provides a support hub with chat, online forms and dedicated numbers for customer support, roadside assistance and other rental needs. Emergency roadside service uses a separate 24-hour number from ordinary billing or reservation support.
