Ledger was founded in Paris in 2014 by a group of security, cryptocurrency and entrepreneurship specialists. The company develops hardware signing devices, the Ledger Wallet software experience and enterprise infrastructure for organizations managing digital assets.
Ledger devices use Secure Element hardware together with Ledger's proprietary operating system to isolate private-key operations from ordinary computers and phones. The products are self-custody tools: Ledger provides the device and software, but users remain responsible for safeguarding their recovery phrase and approving transactions.
Support is provided through the official Ledger Support site. Ledger repeatedly warns that genuine support will not ask for a 24-word recovery phrase or secret recovery phrase; any person or website requesting it should be treated as fraudulent.
