About Empower

Empower is a U.S. financial-services brand focused on workplace retirement plans, individual investing, wealth management and financial guidance. Its history requires a careful distinction between the modern Empower brand and the much older organizations behind it. Empower’s official history says the genesis of the business reaches back to 1891, when its parent organization began as an insurance company in Canada, while the modern Empower brand was created in 2014 by Great-West Lifeco through the combination of retirement businesses associated with Great-West Financial, Putnam Investments and J.P.

Morgan Retirement Plan Services. Empower is headquartered in Greenwood Village, Colorado. That layered history is more accurate than simply calling Empower an 1891 company or, at the other extreme, ignoring its predecessor businesses and saying the entire organization began in 2014. For consumers, the exact account type matters more than the brand name alone. Empower services employer-sponsored retirement plans such as 401(k) and 403(b) arrangements, individual investment and advisory relationships, and other financial products through different legal entities and service teams. A workplace participant generally cannot treat an employer plan like a normal retail brokerage account because the plan document, employer decisions and tax rules can determine contributions, loans, withdrawals and distributions.

Individual investors can have a different agreement, fee schedule and advisory relationship. Users should therefore identify the employer plan, account type and legal entity shown on statements before comparing fees or support outcomes. Empower publishes separate contact routes for workplace customers, plan sponsors and individual investors, and its official Contact Us page is preferable to a generic phone number copied from a third-party directory. Workplace participants currently have a dedicated published support number, while plan sponsors and other customer groups use different lines. Sensitive financial information should not be sent through ordinary email when Empower instructs customers to use authenticated account upload tools.

Account security is especially important because retirement and investment accounts can contain substantial assets and personal information. Customers should access accounts through empower.com or an employer-provided official link, use multifactor authentication and refuse unsolicited requests for passwords, one-time codes, remote-device access or transfers to a supposedly “safe” account. Advisory services, investment options and fees should be described from the specific disclosure governing the account rather than from broad marketing language. Empower has grown through acquisitions, including Personal Capital and retirement businesses from other financial institutions, so legacy account names can appear in documents even when current servicing uses Empower branding.

Customers dealing with an old plan should rely on their latest statement and current official support routing. Scale metrics such as participant counts and assets under administration change with markets and acquisitions and should be dated when used. The durable profile facts are the 2014 launch of the modern Empower organization, Great-West Lifeco parentage, Greenwood Village headquarters and its role in retirement and wealth services.
