Gusto began in 2011 under the ZenPayroll name, founded by Josh Reeves, Tomer London and Edward Kim. The company says the service launched in 2012 as ZenPayroll and was renamed Gusto in September 2015 as the product expanded from small-business payroll into benefits, workers' compensation and a broader people platform. Today Gusto markets an integrated set of tools that can include payroll processing and tax filings, hiring and onboarding, time tracking, benefits administration, contractor payments and HR functions. Payroll software also operates in a regulated and time-sensitive environment.
Employers remain responsible for accurate worker classification, bank funding, tax registrations and business information, and software automation does not replace professional legal, tax or HR advice where judgment is required. A payroll delay or tax notice can have different causes, including bank timing, missing state registrations, incorrect employee data or an external agency issue, so support cases should include the affected payroll date, company account and notice details rather than only a generic complaint. Gusto's current support process strongly favors authenticated help. Its official Help Center says customers can reach support by chat, callback or email after signing in, and explains that identity verification is required before account-specific information can be discussed.
Callback availability can vary by plan and issue, while the site warns that a special six-digit security call code used for support is not the same as a two-step verification code. This is an important anti-fraud distinction: customers should never give a one-time sign-in or two-factor code to an unsolicited caller claiming to be Gusto. Gusto's general contact page lists a sales phone number, but explicitly tells existing customers with payroll questions to sign in for customer care, so a directory should not mislabel the sales line as general account support.
Employees whose employer uses Gusto may also have a different support path from the employer administrator, especially when a problem concerns payroll data supplied by the employer. Gusto's current About page describes the company as a small-business platform for payroll, benefits and HR and dates the commercial launch to 2012, while the 2015 renaming announcement states that the founders started the company in 2011.
