About Nordstrom

Nordstrom began in Seattle in 1901 as a shoe store founded by John W. Nordstrom and Carl Wallin and developed into a national fashion specialty retailer known for apparel, footwear, accessories, beauty, home and service-oriented shopping. The company’s present-day structure includes the full-line Nordstrom brand and the off-price Nordstrom Rack business, but customers should not treat the two as identical stores. Nordstrom Rack has its own website, assortment and return rules, and it mixes merchandise transferred from or related to Nordstrom’s full-line business with products acquired specifically for the off-price channel.

The full-line Nordstrom business emphasizes a broader fashion and designer assortment, beauty, shoes, services and store experiences. Nordstrom also operates digitally through its website and app, while store inventory and services vary by location. The ownership structure changed materially in 2025. Nordstrom had been publicly traded for decades, but on May 20, 2025 members of the Nordstrom family and El Puerto de Liverpool completed their acquisition of the company. Its common stock ceased trading before the New York Stock Exchange opened on May 21, and Nordstrom returned to private ownership.

A current profile should therefore not list NYSE: JWN as an active public-market identity. The company remains headquartered in Seattle, and its official corporate profile says it serves customers through nearly 400 Nordstrom, Nordstrom Local and Nordstrom Rack locations as well as the Nordstrom and Rack digital properties. Exact store counts move as locations open or close, so the store finder is more useful for a customer than a static total. Shopping policies also deserve precise treatment. Nordstrom is widely associated with flexible service, but returns are not an unlimited guarantee.

The current Returns & Exchanges page explains category-specific exceptions and special handling for items such as fine jewelry, oversized merchandise, some third-party brands and gift cards. Refund timing and destination can depend on the original payment method, and Nordstrom Rack follows its own policy. Customers should read the policy that applies to the specific item instead of relying on an old summary of Nordstrom’s reputation for returns. The same separation applies to Nordstrom credit cards, Nordy Club benefits and merchandise support: a credit-account matter may need a financial-services channel, while an order, shipment, return or product question belongs with retail customer service.

Nordstrom currently publishes 1-888-282-6060 as its main customer-service number, and recent official terms also list contact@nordstrom.com for customer-service questions. The customer-service section of nordstrom.com provides additional self-service routes, while store-specific questions are best handled through Store Locations & Events. For products purchased online, the order record is the best reference for fulfillment status, return eligibility and payment details. Inventory indicators can change before an order is finalized, and services such as alterations, styling, pickup, restaurants or beauty appointments are not available in exactly the same form at every location.

Nordstrom’s official company history is also useful for keeping brand relationships straight: Nordstrom Rack began as a clearance center in 1973 and developed into the company’s off-price division rather than a separate unrelated retailer. Today the two brands are part of the same privately held Nordstrom business but serve different shopping missions. For a durable profile, the important points are the 1901 Seattle origin, fashion-specialty retail focus, Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack brand structure, omnichannel operation and 2025 return to private ownership. Product assortment, promotions, individual store services and policy exceptions are more time-sensitive and should be verified when a purchase or return is actually being made.
