Recreational Equipment, Inc. was formed in 1938 by 23 outdoor enthusiasts who pooled resources to obtain climbing equipment. It remains organized as a consumer cooperative, with members at the center of its ownership and governance model.
REI sells equipment and clothing for hiking, camping, cycling, running, climbing, paddling, snow sports and other outdoor activities through stores, REI.com and its app. Anyone can shop, while co-op members receive a separate set of membership benefits.
Customer service handles product questions, online orders and returns by phone and live chat. Membership questions use a separate team and email address, while credit-card servicing and local store inventory can involve other providers or individual stores.
