About Tripadvisor

Tripadvisor is a travel research and marketplace platform built around traveler reviews, destination information and tools for comparing or arranging travel-related experiences. The original Tripadvisor business was founded in February 2000. Its later corporate history is more complicated than a simple founding date: the business was acquired by IAC in 2004, became part of Expedia after IAC’s travel-business separation in 2005, and Tripadvisor, Inc. was formed as a Delaware corporation in July 2011 in connection with the later Expedia spin-off. Tripadvisor completed that spin-off in December 2011 and began trading on Nasdaq under TRIP.

The company’s principal executive offices are in Needham, Massachusetts. Those milestones should be kept distinct so a directory does not incorrectly describe the 2011 legal entity as though the travel site itself began that year. Tripadvisor’s core consumer value comes from combining reviews and opinions with information about accommodations, restaurants, attractions, destinations and travel experiences. Reviews are user-generated content, not a guarantee that every statement is accurate or current. Travelers should read recent reviews, look for patterns across multiple contributors and verify material facts such as accessibility, renovation status, opening hours or mandatory fees with the relevant property or operator before relying on them.

Tripadvisor also connects users to bookable travel products, but the company displayed on the payment record or booking confirmation matters. A hotel booking, attraction ticket or restaurant reservation can involve a third-party supplier, another Tripadvisor Group business or an external booking partner. Tripadvisor Group currently includes businesses such as Tripadvisor, Viator and TheFork, but they are not interchangeable customer-service departments. A Viator activity reservation, for example, should be handled under the booking and support records for that transaction rather than by assuming the Tripadvisor review site itself is the merchant.

The same distinction applies when Tripadvisor sends a traveler to another booking website. For consumer help, Tripadvisor’s investor FAQ points users to its official Help Center, and the current traveler Help Center is hosted at tripadvisorsupport.com. That is a safer support entry point than phone numbers or email addresses posted in old forum threads, many of which can be outdated, region-specific or unofficial. Business owners and property representatives have separate owner-support workflows and should not use investor-relations contact information for listing disputes. Account holders should protect passwords and verification codes and should be cautious of unsolicited contacts claiming they can remove a review or recover a booking for a fee.

Review manipulation and impersonation undermine the value of the platform, so complaints should distinguish a genuine experience with a business from disputes about moderation, listing ownership or a transaction conducted with another seller. Traveler counts, review totals and the size of Tripadvisor’s content database change constantly and are poor evergreen profile facts. The durable corporate picture is clearer: the original Tripadvisor business dates to 2000, Tripadvisor, Inc. was formed in 2011 for the spin-off, the company is headquartered in Needham and trades on Nasdaq.
