About Walgreens

Walgreens traces its history to 1901, when pharmacist Charles R. Walgreen Sr. purchased the drugstore where he worked on Chicago’s South Side. The business grew into a national retail-pharmacy network and today combines prescription services, consumer retail, vaccinations and selected clinical services with digital pharmacy tools, Walgreens.com, mobile applications, pickup and delivery, photo services and specialty-pharmacy operations. Its headquarters are in Deerfield, Illinois. The company’s ownership structure changed materially in 2025 and older profiles can now be misleading: on August 28, 2025, Walgreen Co. announced that it was operating as a private standalone company following the closing of Sycamore Partners’ acquisition of Walgreens Boots Alliance.

That means references describing Walgreens as a current Nasdaq-listed operating division of a public WBA group are outdated for a present-day profile. Corporate ownership, however, should not be confused with pharmacy service responsibility. For a customer, the relevant distinction is usually between a prescription or clinical issue, an online retail order, a store purchase, a photo order or a specialty-pharmacy matter. Prescription refills, insurance questions, transfers, medication availability and pharmacist advice often need the dispensing pharmacy or a pharmacy-specific support route. Walgreens.com orders and general shopping issues use customer-service channels, while specialty pharmacy has separate care teams and numbers.

Walgreens’ official customer-service help pages direct users to topic-specific Contact Us forms and explain that some issues are handled by phone; the general customer-service number published there is 1-877-250-5823. Sensitive health information should be kept within official pharmacy or support channels rather than posted in social-media messages. Store-level availability also matters. Pharmacy hours can differ from the front-store hours, vaccines and clinical services are subject to location, age, state and eligibility rules, and insurance coverage can affect the price or availability of a service. Pickup and delivery promises depend on the item, prescription status, store, address and local operating conditions.

The same caution applies to promotional and loyalty information: myWalgreens offers and Walgreens Cash rules can change, so the account and current offer terms are the controlling source for a specific transaction. Walgreens is a familiar target for impersonation because of its pharmacy role and large customer base. Search ads, fake survey messages, prize promotions and spoofed support calls can imitate the brand. Customers should start at walgreens.com, the Walgreens app or the phone number published on an official Walgreens page and should never disclose a password or one-time code to an unsolicited caller.

Health questions should not be answered from unverified social accounts. Walgreens’ corporate history now describes it as America’s largest independent pharmacy and notes the transition to a private company in 2025. Store counts, daily-customer figures and staffing totals are useful dated statistics but change over time and should not be treated as permanent facts. The durable profile is clearer: Walgreens was founded in 1901 by Charles R. Walgreen Sr., remains headquartered in Deerfield, operates a U.S.-focused retail-pharmacy and health-services business, and has been privately operated following the Sycamore transaction completed on August 28, 2025.
