About Northwestern Mutual

Northwestern Mutual was founded in 1857 in Janesville, Wisconsin, and moved its headquarters to Milwaukee in 1859. Its mutual-company structure is a defining feature: The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company does not have public shareholders and is owned for corporate purposes by its policyowners. The company has paid policyowner dividends every year since 1872, although dividends are reviewed annually and are not guaranteed.

The Northwestern Mutual name covers several related financial activities rather than one universal product company. The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company issues life and disability insurance, annuities and certain long-term-care-related benefits. Investment brokerage is offered through Northwestern Mutual Investment Services, LLC, while investment advisory and trust services are offered through Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company and other appropriately licensed affiliates. Product availability depends on state, entity and representative licensing.

Current company material says Northwestern Mutual serves more than five million clients and operates through thousands of financial advisors and professionals. Its 2025 annual report described nearly $2.5 trillion of life-insurance protection in force and more than $400 billion in client assets in the Wealth business. Those figures describe different parts of the organization and should not be combined into a single “assets” number without context.

General customer questions can be directed to 866-950-4644, while policyholders and clients can also use secure account access or work through their assigned financial professional. Claims have product-specific forms and processes. The company’s contact page also publishes its Milwaukee headquarters address and direct corporate number, but headquarters is not the most efficient route for routine policy servicing.

Northwestern Mutual maintains public corporate and advisor-related social channels, but financial account information should never be sent through public posts or unverified direct messages.
